Would you like to be tested after a new relationship, unprotected sex or a potential exposure? Do you have symptoms, or has your partner just been diagnosed with an STBBI?

Clinique IPS du Palais in Saint-Hyacinthe offers confidential services for the screening, assessment, follow-up and management of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs).

Our approach is tailored to your situation: whether or not you have symptoms, type of exposure, sexual practices, time since exposure and risk factors.

Which appointment should I choose?

Each situation corresponds to a type of appointment. Find the one that matches yours.

Do you have symptoms?

STBBI consultation with symptoms$155

An STBBI consultation with symptoms is recommended if you have, for example:

  • pain or a burning sensation;
  • unusual discharge;
  • irritation;
  • lesion or sore;
  • genital or pelvic pain;
  • urinary symptoms that may be associated with an STBBI;
  • or any other symptom that appeared after a sexual exposure.

The nurse performs a confidential clinical assessment, determines the appropriate samples or analyses and arranges the necessary care according to the situation.

Don’t have any symptoms?

Preventive STBBI screening — no symptoms$155

Preventive screening is for people who have no symptoms but who want to check their sexual health.

It may be relevant, for example, after:

  • a new relationship;
  • unprotected sex;
  • a change of partner;
  • multiple partners;
  • a potential exposure;
  • or when screening is recommended for your situation.

During the consultation, the nurse assesses your risk factors to determine the relevant analyses and samples.

Has your partner been diagnosed with an STBBI?

Consultation for a partner exposed to an STBBI$125

If your current or recent partner has been diagnosed with an STBBI, a consultation may be recommended even if you have no symptoms.

The professional will assess:

  • the STBBI involved;
  • the nature of the exposure;
  • the time since the contact;
  • the relevant tests;
  • and whether treatment or follow-up may be needed.

Treatment is not automatically necessary in every situation. The course of action depends on factors such as the STBBI involved and the clinical assessment.

STBBI results follow-up and treatment

STBBI results follow-up and treatment$85

When results require management, a follow-up consultation makes it possible to:

  • explain the results;
  • answer the patient’s questions;
  • determine the appropriate management;
  • arrange or prescribe treatment when it is indicated and permitted within the scope of practice;
  • discuss measures to reduce the risk of transmission;
  • address screening or treatment of partners when relevant.

Administration of an injectable STBBI treatment

Administration of an injectable treatment$25

At the clinic, a nurse can administer an injectable medication already prescribed to treat an STBBI.

This appointment includes only the administration of the medication. It does not include:

  • a new clinical assessment;
  • the issuing of a new prescription;
  • or the cost of the medication.

A valid prescription and the required medication must be available before the appointment.

Your appointment

How does STBBI screening work?

The appointment begins with a confidential discussion to understand your situation.

The nurse may ask you about, among other things:

  • whether or not you have symptoms;
  • when the exposure occurred;
  • the type of sexual contact;
  • whether or not protection was used;
  • the number of partners;
  • the exposed sites;
  • your history of STBBIs;
  • and certain factors that may change the screening recommendations.

This information makes it possible to select the appropriate analyses. Depending on the situation, screening may require different types of samples.

Samples may include, among others:

  • urine sample;
  • vaginal swab;
  • urethral swab;
  • anal swab;
  • throat swab;
  • blood test.

The type of sample depends on the infections being tested for, the exposure and the sexual practices reported.1

Laboratory

Laboratory analyses: right at the clinic or at the laboratory of your choice

At Clinique IPS du Palais, we work with Dynacare, a private laboratory, among others, to facilitate the analyses prescribed for STBBI screening and follow-up.

When analyses are done with Dynacare, several samples can be collected right at the clinic, depending on the analyses requested and the applicable procedures.

The convenience of on-site sample collection with Dynacare

Thanks to our collaboration with Dynacare, several samples can be collected right at the clinic and sent to the private laboratory. You can also choose to use your requisition in the public system or at another laboratory.

  • consultation and sample collection in the same place;
  • fewer trips and steps;
  • samples collected right at the clinic;
  • easier coordination between assessment, analyses and follow-up;
  • smoother care when a result requires intervention.

A single place for assessment, sample collection and follow-up.

Do you prefer the public system or another laboratory?

Using the private laboratory is not mandatory.

Our team can also prepare the necessary laboratory requisitions so that you can have your analyses done:

  • in the public system;
  • at another private laboratory;
  • or at the laboratory of your choice, when the requested analyses are available there.

Patients remain free to choose where to have their tests done.

The goal is to offer flexible care: you can choose to complete the process directly at the clinic with our private partner Dynacare, or leave with the requisitions needed to have your tests done elsewhere.

Laboratory test fees may vary depending on the laboratory chosen and are not necessarily included in the price of the consultation. When private tests are offered at the clinic, the applicable fees are presented to you before they are done.

Infections

Which STBBIs can be tested for?

Depending on the clinical situation and risk factors, screening may be recommended for certain infections, such as:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C

Other infections depending on the situation

Depending on symptoms, sexual practices and the clinical situation, other infections may also be tested for, including:

  • Genital herpes
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Mycoplasma genitalium
  • Certain HPV-related infections

However, not all of these infections are routinely screened for in a person without symptoms.1, 3–6

Not all STBBIs are routinely tested for.

The professional will determine the most appropriate samples and tests based on:1

  • your symptoms
  • your sexual practices
  • your risk factors
  • the exposed sites

There is no single “ complete STBBI test ” that automatically applies to everyone.

Screening must be tailored to each person’s exposure, risk factors and situation.

When should you get tested after an exposure?

The timing of screening is important. After a recent exposure, some infections may not be detectable right away. A test done too early may therefore sometimes need to be repeated.1

The nurse can assess with you the date of exposure, the type of exposure, the infections that may be involved and the right time to do or repeat certain tests.

A negative result obtained very soon after an exposure does not always definitively rule out an infection.

Prevention

Why get screened without symptoms?

An STBBI can be present without causing symptoms. A person can therefore be infected without knowing it.1, 2

If you have no symptoms, preventive STBBI screening is the appointment to choose.

Among other things, screening can help:

  • detect certain asymptomatic infections;
  • get care when needed;
  • reduce the risk of complications;
  • reduce the risk of transmission;
  • protect your partners;
  • make informed decisions about your sexual health.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you have an STBBI without symptoms?

Yes. Several STBBIs can be present without causing symptoms. That is why screening may be recommended after certain exposures even when you feel perfectly well.

What is the difference between STI and STBBI?

The term STBBI stands for sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection. The term STI is still commonly used by the public, but STBBI also includes infections that can be transmitted through blood.

Do all STBBIs need to be tested for every time?

No. The recommended analyses vary depending on, among other things, the type of exposure, sexual practices, risk factors, the presence of symptoms and the time since exposure.

Should I wait until I have symptoms?

No. Some STBBIs can remain asymptomatic. Screening may therefore be recommended even when there are no symptoms at all.

I have symptoms. Should I choose preventive screening?

No. Preventive screening is for people who have no symptoms. If you have symptoms, choose instead: STBBI consultation with symptoms.

Can throat or anal samples be taken?

Yes, when these samples are indicated based on the type of exposure and clinical recommendations. The sampling site is determined according to each patient’s situation.

Does a negative result mean I have no STBBI?

Not necessarily if the exposure is very recent. Depending on the infection being tested for and the time since exposure, some analyses may need to be repeated.

Can I have my tests done right at the clinic?

Yes. Clinique IPS du Palais works with the private laboratory Dynacare, which allows several samples to be collected directly at the clinic when this option is chosen and available.

Do I have to use Dynacare?

No. The clinic can also prepare the necessary requisitions so that the analyses can be done in the public system or at another laboratory.

My partner was diagnosed with an STBBI. What should I do?

A consultation makes it possible to assess the nature of the exposure and determine whether screening, treatment or follow-up is recommended.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Information about the patient’s sexual health is handled confidentially.
